Death Comes for the Archbishop is the story of bishop Jean Marie Latour and his companion Joseph Vaillant. The clergymen travel from Ohio to the newly established diocese in New Mexico, just annexed into the United States. Latour spends the remainder of his life attempting to establish the Vatican's authority in New Mexico where a Spanish clergy has already strongly entrenched itself among the natives. Latour's career is an object lesson in the pain and suffering caused by imperialism, and in the futility of attempting to change a people's beliefs.
