Paul's Case follows Paul, a teenager who lives for the time he spends working as an usher at Carnegie Hall. Paul is disgusted by every aspect of his middle-class life and only feels alive when surrounded by glamor and drama. When Paul is suspended from school and forbidden from working as an usher, he takes drastic measures to try to make his daydreams reality, but it ends in tragedy. The short story deals with the consequences of being unable to work hard or face up to reality.
