The Sound and the Fury is a novel by William Faulkner about the downfall of the Compsons, a Southern aristocratic family. The book's four parts each present a different character's perspective: the mentally handicapped son, Benjy and his memories, the intellectual and scrupulous Quentin, who drowns himself, the cynical and selfish Jason, and the black servant Dilsey, who takes care of Benjy and the ruined family. The sister Caddy and her daughter is also central to each of these narratives.
