2. Of Janies three marriages, Logan and Joe provide her with a sense of security and status. However, only her union with Teacake flourishes into true love. Explain.
Janie married three people: Logan Killicks, Joe Starks, and Teacake. Because Janie felt that marriage should be based specifically on love and companionship, Teacake was the only husband she was truly happy with. In this essay Im going to describe Janies marriages with her three husbands, and go into detail why Teacake was her true love.
Janies first husband was Logan Killicks. Because of Janies first kiss with Johnny Taylor by the pear tree, her grandmother forced her to marry Logan. Although Janie wasnt attracted to him, she figured that love would eventually grow between them. Janie was wrong. Although Logan provided for Janie a safe place to lay her head, he was rude to her; he verbally abused her; he treated her unfairly; he gave her strict rules to follow; and he didnt show Janie any love or compassion. Due to his actions, Janie was miserable in her marriage to Logan and was happy when he passed. Later she expressed hatred tward her grandmother for making her go through that marriage in the first place.
Janies second husband was Joe Starks. In the beginning, she and Joe had fun together, and Joe showed her the love that she wanted out of marriage. Shortly after they got married, though, Joe changed. Although Joe gave Janie everything any woman could ever dream of: beautiful clothing, nice place to live, and royalty, she became a trophy wife. Joe no longer respected her. Janie had to abide by unnecessary rules. For example, she had to wear her hair in wraps; she had to be in the house at a certain time; and she wasnt allowed to associate with the towns people. To add insult to injury, when Janie finally stood up to Joe about how he treated her, he hit her. When Joe passed Janie did not grieve nor mourn. She was again miserable within another marriage and relived that it was over.
Janies third husband was Teacake. When she and Teacake were together they were like two kids in a candy store. They really enjoyed each other, and it seemed that they were the only two people in the world. Teacake had his issues too. For example, he was a gambler. He often put himself in dangerous situations that had Janie worried sick about him. That didnt stop the two from loving one another, though. Teacake taught Janie how to fish and shoot a gun, and Janie became better than it than he did. He and Janie worked the fields together, and everywhere Teacake went Janie went, and not because she had to, because she wanted to. When Janie was with Teacake she felt like she was finally living for herself, and she was finally happy. Teacake gave Janie the tender love and companionship that Janie wanted all along, and the two were inseparable. When Teacake passed Janie grieved, and she felt no remorse or regret. She was just happy that she got the chance to share the experience with him.
Janie and I share the same beliefs when it comes to what marriage should be based on. Some marry for the wrong reasons, like money, wealth, looks, etcetera, but Janie had all of these things, and wasnt happy until she found true love. Shes a prime example of what marriage should be. I want to get married one day, and I hope to find the love that Janie shred with Teacake.
