Shogun is the story of Richard Blackthorn, an English sailor stranded in Japan after attempting to dare a dangerous strait. Blackthorn makes swift inroads with powerful samurai in the camp of Lord Toranaga, a defender of the child emperor and a claimant to the title of Shogun, or supreme warlord. Toranaga is opposed by the scheming Ishido, though, and Blackthorn is quickly drawn into their combat while also forming a romantic attachment to the beautiful Mariko.
