One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is the story of "Chief" Bromden, a Native American inmate of a mental asylum, and his focus on Randall Patrick McMurphy, a petty crook who pretends to be insane to avoid prison. McMurphy clashes repeatedly with the domineering Nurse Ratched, the asylum's administrator, until a physical altercation prompts Ratched to have him lobotomized. The novel dwells on the inhuman treatment of mental patients in the United States and on the institutionalized violence of administrative staff.
The acutes are patients who officials believe can still be cured. With few exceptions, they are there voluntarily.
The Chronics are patients who will never be cured. Many of the chronics are in vegetative states.
