Totem and Taboo

Totem and Taboo by Sigmund Freud

Totem and Taboo is a 1913 book by Sigmund Freud linking his anthropological theories and observations to his theories of psychoanalysis. The book, divided into four essays, stemming from the social role of the totem, an animal or natural phenomenon representing a specific clan. According to Freud, the totem as an object of sexual fetishism allows for the organization of society around a taboo against incest and the agonistic bond amongst brothers burdened with the collective murder of an original father figure.
