The Caucasian Chalk Circle is a play about the heroine Grusha and her struggle to raise the noble child Michael, son of a carless governor and his wife, both of whom were usurped by their vain and foolish son. Grusha proves a wise and caring parent, and the play is in part a parable about the foolishness of equating class and virtue. It follows Grusha's life on the run with her surrogate son and the governor's wife's efforts to save face by reclaiming the child.
