Doctorow based loosely on the trial and subsequent execution of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, American spies who passed secrets about the atomic bomb to the Soviet Union. The book follows Daniel, a PhD student looking into his parents execution and his experiences in 1960s politics. Daniel participates in an anti-draft march and reflects on revolutionary politics. The book contains themes of resistence, the past and political power.
