A Burnt-Out Case is the story of Querry, a famous architect who loses his passion and becomes mired in apathy and depression. Fleeing to a leper colony, he lives anonymously and takes no joy in his life. Eventually he is able to form attachments to other lepers and to the wife of a prudish Catholic journalist. These attachments lead to tragedy, though, as while helping to plan and build a hospital for the lepers Querry is accused of adultery and shot dead by the journalist.
