The Tin Drum is a 1959 novel by Gunter Grass about a boy named Oskar Matzerath who is born with the mind of an adult and who decides not to grow up past the age of three. His father is a member of the Nazi Party and after Oskar has an affair with his father's new wife, he joins a group of dwarfs who entertain the German troops. After the war, Oskar joins a jazz ensemble and, after being falsely accused of murder, is sent to an insane asylum.
