Steppenwolf

Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse

Steppenwolf is a 1927 novel by Hermann Hess centering on the dichotomy between enlightened humanity and wolf-like alienation and ruthlessness. Middle-aged Harry is given a book Treatise on the Steppenwolf by a man advertising a magic theater. After finding the book describes him almost exactly, he attempts to find the magic theater. Brought into the life of bourgeois self-indulgence by a woman named Hermine, Harry eventually enters the magic theater, a labyrinth of metaphysical self-revalation symbolizing the fractured pieces of his life.

  • Harry Haller– the protagonist, a middle-aged man
  • Pablo– a saxophonist
  • Hermine– a young woman Haller meets at a dance
  • Maria– Hermine's friend
