Annie John is a 1985 novel by Jamaica Kincaid about Annie John, a girl growing up in the Carribean island of Antigua. Annie is extremely attached to her mother and upset that someday she must leave her. After she is sent to school, she falls in love with a girl named Gwen and, later, admires another girl named "Red Girl." Annie advances in school and suffers from depression, eventually leaving her family for England to attend nursing school. The novel deals with issues of racism, cultural difference and lesbianism.
