A partly autobiographical novel, This Side of Paradise is the coming of age story of Amory Blaine, a man who was born to wealth but ultimately loses it all. He has the fortune to attend a prep school and later Princeton, but is disinterested in studying. Amory has love affairs, ends up fighting in World War I and is later engaged, but is left by his fiancee for a richer man. By the end, the carefree boy from the beginning has grown to understand the folly of his ways.
