A Rose for Emily

The story, A Rose for Emily, by William Faulkner really caught my attention by showing how one persons life varies from another. The people in the town were on the outside looking in, so they didnt really realize the depths of her life. Emilys father had a big impact on her life as far as friends and relationships. The death of her father traumatized her psyche and made her turn the blind eye to his death. The death of her father influenced her to kill her lover.

When Emily was younger, her family was wealthy and very well known around the town. She was a renowned lady in the town. Her father was a very important factor in her life. She was closely kept by her father and was rarely seen outside of the house. When he died she lied about his death for three days because she was terrified of her life without him. The people of the town felt she had to do that: We remembered all the young men her father had driven away, and we knew that with nothing left, she would have to cling to that which had robber her, as people will. The house was all Miss Emily had left.

Emilys life took a big transition after the death of her father. She was one of the last remaining older people left in her family. She refused to let go of the past as the next generations were taking over. Miss Emily refused to pay her taxes because she was stuck on the way things used to be in the old South. Even though the passing of her father was a sad moment for Emily, she was free from the control that her father had on her life.

In the summer after her fathers death, she found love in a guy named Homer Barron. Everyone thought that they would get married, but thats not what Homer wanted. He was just there to pave the sidewalks, and was only looking for someone to date. He was from a lower working class in the North, as for Miss Emily was from a higher class in the South. So when Miss Emily and Homer were seen riding in the buggy the people of the town thought that was very unacceptable.

In the beginning when Emily began to date Homer, the town was glad that she would have interest, because the ladies all said, Of course a Grierson would not think seriously of a Northerner, a day laborer. But Miss Emily was very interested in Homer, only to find out that in the end he had not planned to be with her, but to simply do his job and go back North. When she went and bought the rat poison they all said She will kill herself. But truly it was to poison Homer Barron because she knew that he was going to leave her, and she couldnt take another person that she truly loved - as she loved her father - would leave her. After Homers disappearance Miss Emily was not seen very much at all up until her death. When she died they discovered that she had been sleeping with a dead body, in which they had believed to be the one of Homer Baron.

In conclusion, the way that Miss Emilys life played out the death of her father and the way he treated her when he was alive had a great impact on some of the decisions that she made during her life. Id like to think that she was crazy for sleeping with a dead man for as many years as she did, but I think she simply just wanted someone to love as well as love her back, after her father passed.
