In his novel A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens develops the theme that money itself does not buy happiness. He tells the story of Mr. Scrooge, a greedy miserable man learning about life from three ghosts who visit him one night. Charles Dickens uses characters with money and without to help Scrooge understand. Throughout the novel characters with money have parties and play games to show true happiness. Some characters with money dont always find happiness in what they have, but by what they do. For example, Mr.Fezziwig has money which he spends on a Christmas party and invites a lot of people to have fun. While the party was going on Mr.Fezziwig started to dance very wildly and he was happy because everyone else was happy. Scrooges nephew Fred has money. Fred is a different kind of man then Mr. Fezziwig because money is of no use to him. Fred spends time with his friends and family by playing games like yes and no. The story starts when 2 portly gentlemen are collecting donations. When they ask Mr. Scrooge for a generous donation, Scrooge turns them down. The portly gentlemen are not asking for themselves but for the people who need it more than they do.
The Ghost of Christmas Present is the first ghost that comes to visit Scrooge. The ghost takes Scrooge to his nephews house while they were playing the games and enjoying each other. Scrooge thought it was so fun that even though he wasnt able to be seen he wanted to stay. So now you know about how characters with money dont always use it on themselves.
Throughout the novel characters without money simply find happiness in their family. Bob Cratchit is a character with little money and finds true happiness in spending time with his family. Bob Cratchit came home from work to his family for a Christmas dinner. Bobs family played a prank on him by hiding the older daughter in a corner. When Bob asked where she was the family told him that she didnt come. Bob got sad and then she came out of the corner and surprised him and Bob was then filled with joy.
Tiny Tim who is also apart of the Cratchit family finds happiness by reminding people of the miracles of Christmas. Tiny Tim went to church with Bob Cratchit who is his father and Tiny Tim said that god can make blind men see and lame beggars walk. The Cratchit family dont have a lot of money but are still happy. The Cratchit family finds happiness in each other and in what they have. They dress in their best clothes even if its not that much, they laugh and talk sing all the time. So now you know why characters with little money find happiness in what they have and their families.
When Scrooge meets the ghost of Christmas past. The ghost takes him to his past to when scrooge was a school boy. Scrooge sees himself and begins to cry. Scrooge cries because he sees himself lonely as a child. It was the first time Scrooge cried in years. The ghost of Christmas past also showed Scrooge a scene from his past when Scrooges sister came to get him.
When the ghost of Christmas future comes to show Scrooge what will happen if Scrooge doesnt change his ways, and how his attitude influences others and can even save a life.
Towards the end of the story Scrooge realizes his flaws and changes his attitude. By the end of the novel Scrooges changes and becomes kinder and happier. Scrooge buys a very large turkey for the Cratchits. Scrooge then goes to Freds to wish him a merry Christmas. Scrooge becomes a better person to the Cratchits. Scrooge arrives at work early in the morning. He waits for Bob to come in to work. Bob comes in 18 and a half minutes late. Scrooge feigning disgust scolds Bob before suddenly announcing his plans to give him a large raise and assist his troubled family. Bob was surprised and happy. As time passes Scrooge is as good as his word. He helps the Cratchits and becomes a second father to Tiny Tim who doesnt die as predicted in the ghost ominous vision.
When the two portly gentlemen come to Scrooge again asking for a contribution, Scrooges attitude drastically changes and he gives a generous donation.
