A Rose for Emily

In William Faulkner short story A rose for Emily the title itself tells the story about a girl name Emily who faced many tragedies in her life. Mr. Faulkner tells this story as a flashback because the story begins with the death of Miss Emily Grierson. Her character shows that she is desperately lonely and isolated from the other people of the town. Why was Miss Emilys life so sad and miserable? In my point of view I think its because of the people that were involved in her life. Her father and Homer play the most important role in Miss Emilys life. Her father didnt allow anyone to be in her life and Homer brought joy at the beginning but broke her heart towards the end.

Emilys father is the most to blame for the grief in her life. He was very strict and during the time he was alive he force away all the men that were in love with her. I believe that he was the reason for the solitude in her life. It was hard for her to admit the death of her father because he was the only person she had. He never gave her the chance to develop relationship with anyone else. She was the weakest at the time he passed away because she felt so lonely. After his death she felt irreplaceable ties towards him, like any daughter would. She felt like her world completely broke into pieces. It seems like she didnt wanted to give his body away because Mr. Gierson controlled Emily all her life. After his death she wanted to temporary control by refusing to give up his body. Although the death of her father was tragic, her life took a new turn. As described in the story it says that we saw her again, her hair cut short making her look like a girl. This to me seems like she sets herself free from her controlling father.

After the death of her father she finally gets out of the fear she had held in for long time. With the new found freedom she begins to live her own life and seeks for love. This is when Homer Barron was brought to the story as a constructor with dark skin tone, a booming voice, and light-colored eyes. People of Jefferson seem to like him because of his gregarious nature and good sense of humor. Emily develops an interest in him so every Sunday afternoon she goes for a drive in the yellow-wheeled buggy with him. The people of Jefferson in the town didnt believe that a rich girl in the town would be interest in day laborer. But when they find out that she purchased a complete outfit of mens clothing they conclude that they are married. Unfortunately Homer was not interested in Emily because he liked man. There is nothing more painful then loving someone without being loved. Emily was ready to settle but Homer didnt seem to be interested to settle with her. Emily was heartbroken and finally she poisons Homer Barron. I think she poisoned him because she felt like if she cant have his love then no one can. She keeps his body in her room in order to achieve total power over him.

Since the front door remained locked and homer was not around people seem to be curious but they thought it was just because of the way she was. Many people didnt conclude that she was dead because once in a while they would see her at the window. Many years passed by but the front door was still locked. She even refused to let the postal delivery to her house. The only person that came in and out of the house was the Negro man. One day she died from being ill in the house filled with dust. No one knew she was sick because there wasnt anyone to get information from. The Negro man would not share anything about her to anyone.

The whole town went to her funeral but they didnt go there because they care about her. They never got to know her. The reason they went was because everyone was curious to see the inside of the house. All her life she lived alone and she died alone. This is the reason I blame her father for her sorrowful life. The men in her life left a harsh impact in her. She was separated from a normal life. Even if she had tried she would not know how to have a social life because of her father. This story also gives the reader a vision of us living in the community, experiencing the same things as described in the story. Living in community where people likes to gossip makes is harder to have a social life. But Emily always held her head high as described in the story.
