The Call of the Wild is written by Jack London and was first published in 1990. The story was based on Londons own experiences in the Klondike in 1897; it is one of the very great dog stories. Buck is a kind lovable dog that lives with the Millers but unfortunately is separated from them and headed towards a rough life in the Alaskan Gold Rush. Which is where Buck has to make a judgment between existing in a mans world or returning to the nature.
Buck lived in a big house in the sun-kissed Santa Clara Valley, (pg.1) it was called Judge Millers place. And over this great demesne Buck ruled.(pg.1) He thinks of himself as king of the house, sure there were other nonpermanent dogs (pg.1) but Buck was born and had lived in that house for 4 years. The Millers were pretty well off with money and they had an assortment of servants and ground keeper but one should not have been trusted. Buck did not have the easiest life but in the end he had to make a tough decision between the wild or going back to a mans world.
This particular dog thinks of himself as the king of the Millers and he rules that house. he had a fine pride in himself.(pg.2) He thinks so highly of himself because in a way the Millers have treated him very highly. It was true there was other dogsbut they did not countthey came and went (pg.1) The Millers did own other dogs but Buck thought of himself as a special addition to the family. But Buck was neither a house-dog or a kennel. The whole realm was his. (pg.2)He would go hunting with the Judges sons or escort his daughters on long walks and would play around with the grandkids.
A lot of his respect and love from the family came from Elmo which was Bucks father and the Judges inseparable companion, and Buck bid fair to follow in the way of his father. (pg.2) While the Judge was at a meeting and the boys were organizing their athletic club is when Manuel the ground keeper who was addicted to gambling took Buck on a stroll. That was the last time Buck was seen by the Millers and was sold to a strange man. He was beaten; but he was not broken. (pg.6) Buck had given up to a man in a club he knew he was no match for the club but he was not the type of dog that gives up, he was a king. The facts of life took on a fiercer aspect; (pg.6) Buck did not rule anymore
