Sophie's choice is the story of failing writer Stingo and the object of his affections, a Polish survivor of World War II named Sophie Zowistowska. Sophie slowly reveals her story to Stingo, eventually admitting that she was made by a sadistic Nazi doctor to choose between her two children. Crushed by the choice, Sophie chose her daughter for death in the gas chambers of Auschwitz while her son lived on to uncertain fate within the camp. At the story's conclusion Sophie commits suicide out of guilt.
