Shadow and Act is a collection of essays by African American activist Ralph Ellison, author of The Invisible Man. The collection's title is a reference to the essay The Shadow and the Act, a critique of William Faulkner's Intruder in the Dust and an exploration of stereotypes of Black Americans in media. The collection was highly influential in the Civil Rights world of the 1960s and helped to shape much of its academic and literary impact.
