Blindness examines what happens to society when nearly everyone suddenly, and without reason, becomes blind. The only character in the book to escape blindness is The Doctor's Wife. The blind people, plus the Doctor's Wife, are initially quarantined together and chaos breaks out, as access to food and water is limited. The Doctor's Wife eventually leads a group of people away from the quarantine, back to her and the Doctor's home. As quickly as the blindness descended and without explanation, it lifts from people.
