In the Skin of a Lion is a which depicts the lives of immigrants living and working in Toronto in the early 1900s. It follows the life of main character Patrick Lewis from his boyhood in Ontario through his arrival in Toronto in the early 1920s. There, he works as part of a crew building a tunnel under Lake Ontario, a job which introduces him the lives of immigrants living in the city. Patrick becomes embroiled in their world, making friends and meeting Alice, his lover.
