An Inspector Calls is the story of the Birling family and Inspector Goole, a man who arrives during their celebratory high-class dinner to question them about the suicide of an impoverished woman, Eva Smith. The entanglement of the wealthy family with Smith's case is slowly revealed through Goole's sharp questioning, and the family devolves into infighting, rage, and shame. Eventually Goole departs and it is revealed that he was not a police officer at all, but that the case is a real one and the Birlings will suffer for it.
