Cold Sassy Tree is the story of teenage boy Will Tweedy as he copes with coming of age in Cold Sassy, Georgia. The story explores religious morality, small-town gossip, and other social taboos at the beginning of the twentieth century. Will must deal with his father's remarriage immediately after the death of his mother, and with the community's response of judgment and disapproval. The novel spends time pondering consensus and groupthink as opposed to the independent formulation of opinions.
