At-mun is born an African prince but is kidnapped and sold in New England, renamed Amos. Amos works for various masters before buying his freedom from a tanner. Eventually he buys the freedom of his first wife, who shortly dies, and then his second wife's, who also dies. Finally he buys the freedom of his third wife and becomes a successful tanner in New Hampshire.
