The story takes place in India, shortly after its independence from Britai and centers on Lata, a nineteen-year-old girl whose mother is trying to find her a suitable boy to marry. Throughout the novel she is presented with various suitors and must choose between Kabir, Amit and Haresh, while trying not to be controlled by her mother and brother.
