The Emperor Jones is the story of Brutus Jones told in eight scenes. Jones, an African-American who is imprisoned for murder, escapes from prison and makes his way to the Caribbean where he builds himself an empire and declares himself its ruler. The play is presented as a series of flashbacks narrated by Jones during his flight from a rebellion launched by his own subjects, Caribbean islanders who have grown tired of his corrupt rule.
