Eragon continues to have confused feelings for Arya, who takes him aside one night to instruct him in the complicated etiquette of elves. She explains that elves hold grudges for centuries and practice politics of extreme subtlety and complexity. Arya rebuffs Eragon when he attempts to reach out to her in a more personal way, but she accepts the apology that Saphira makes him offer and confides that she is afraid, though she doesn’t say why.
