Maestro is the story of Paul Crabbe and his piano teacher, the title character Eduard Keller. Keller is a Jew from Vienna whose family was lost in the Holocaust. Paul initially resents and dislikes the old man, but over the course of the novel they form a powerful connection as Paul's musical ability flowers under Keller's tutelage. Eventually Keller dies and Paul is confronted by the depth of his feelings for his departed teacher.
