Eragon, a young adult fantasy novel, is the first book in the Inheritance Cycle. It tells the story of a young boy named Eragon who hatches a dragon, Saphira, out of a mysterious stone he finds in the woods. Eragon bonds closely with Saphira and becomes a dragon rider, drawing the attention of the evil king Galbatorix, who sends his servants, the Ra'zac, to kill him. While escaping from the Ra'zac, Eragon and his mentor Brom become embroiled in plots against the evil king.
When Murtagh suggest Eragon go on ahead, Eragon refuses, stating that someone who saved his life couldn’t be left behind. So they continue on together, unsure of where to go. Eragon suggest they seek out the elves, though they are unsure of how to reach the elves. They finally decide they must travel across the Hadarac Desert to reach the Beor Mountains where the Varden could be, outside the Empire’s reach.
Because water and food will be an issue in the desert, Eragon practices turning sand into water. He fails at first, until he focuses his emotions into it and the sadness of feeling homesick. The previous energy he needed to perform the task isn’t needed and he is able to make water rise to the surface of sand. Rather than creating it, he draws it out of the sand, making the decision to travel through the desert final.
