The Cider House Rules

The Cider House Rules by John Irving

The Cider House Rules is the story of Homer Wells, an orphan who apprentices as a doctor to his orphanage's resident physician, Wilbur Larch. Larch trains Wells to perform abortions, an illegal operation at the time. Conflicted, Homer leaves and takes work at a cider house where he works as a hired hand before realizing after Larch's death that his mentor did good and necessary work for women who could not help themselves. Wells takes Larch's position and becomes the orphanage physician.
