The Satanic Verses is a novel about two Bollywood actors, Farishta and Chamcha, who are flying in a plane when it is hijacked and explodes. Both characters are magically saved and Farishta becomes the archangel Gibreel and Chamcha becomes the devil. Farishta attempts to rekindle his lost love with Allie Cone, while Chamcha feeds Farishta's jealousy of Allie in order to avenge Farishta's having forsaken him after the crash. Farishta eventually forgives Chamcha, but, after returning to India, kills Allie and himself, leaving Chamcha to be partially redeemed.
