The story then follows Major Kovalyov, a toady civil servant who wakes up without a nose and embarrassedly searches throughout the city for his lost nose, chasing it after it appears in the uniform of a superior officer. In the end, Kovalyov awakes one morning to find his nose reattached. The story contains themes of absurdism, judgement and social conventions.
