In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the first character introduced to the reader is Ralph. Ralph proves to be a necessary character throughout the story. Ralph is necessary because he demonstrates good leadership, he functions with democratic ideas, and he matures throughout the story. The reader should definitely focus on Ralph while reading.
Ralph shows throughout the story that he is an exceptional leader. Ralph and Piggy, who is a fat boy introduced right after Ralph(7), are the ones to bring all the boys together in the first place. After all had gathered and the role of Chief assigned, Ralph started working to make sure everyone, or at least most, were happy, focused on rescue, and prepared to help with basic needs.(23) To help with the issue of rescue, Ralph proposes a signal fire, but the first attempt ends with large amounts of devastation. Additionally, Ralph also shows his leadership skills every time he put the needs of the group before his own. Ralph seemed to realize that the boys needed to be treated respectfully. He works to make tents with Simon, a very soft-spoken boy, and eventually gets them up, with help. Ralph also shows that he is a good leader when he starts making rules for around camp. Ralph realizes to maintain peace, he needs the maintain order. All of Ralphs qualities end up making him a well-rounded, competent leader.
Ralph , through his leadership, shows many democratic ideas. Notably, from the beginning, Ralph encouraged voting. He let the boys vote for Chief, a serious issue that at the time since there was a small bit of controversy. Ralph also showed democratic ideas by making sure to hold meetings and communicating, while also letting everyone share what they needed too. When a person wanted to speak they had to have the conch in their possession in order to be able too. Ralph used democratic ideas to keep order and to make sure everyone was happy.
Throughout this story, Ralph matures dramatically. Ralph, who starts out thinking of the island like a place to wait until his father comes to rescue him, soon realizes that it is necessary for order to be found. As the story progresses, Ralph learns that life isnt a game. He realizes he needs to focus on survival as well as rescue. Then, survival first and most importantly with rescue as more of an afterthought. Toward the end, Ralph makes a startling revelation. The revelation being that, there is good and bad in everyone. There is a beast in everyone. That is when he matures.
Throughout the story, Ralph proves again and again that he is a necessary character. He shows good leadership and democratic ideas around camp. Ralph matured on the island, making a startling revelation at the end of his stay there. All in all, Ralph proved to be a fascinating character.
