Behind every tragedy, there was a hope. Hope and tragedy is one of the main concepts in the book Of Mice and Men. George, Lennie and Curleys wife have experienced hope and tragedy first hand. These characters in Of Mice and Men have encountered hope and tragedy which affects their life greatly.

George has experienced a lot of tragedy in his life but has also encountered hope. Firstly, a tragedy that George experiences is that he to kill his best friend, Lennie, by shooting him in the head. As George aimed the gun at Lennie, [his] hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger (Steinbeck 106). This affected George because he has to live knowing that he killed his best friend. Secondly, Georges only hope is owning his own little place of land with Lennie. George said warmly to Lennie, wed belong there. There wouldnt be no more running round the country and gettin fed by a Jap cook (Steinbeck 57). George would be able to live peacefully in their house and would not have to protect Lennie from their boss or worry about getting fired. Another tragedy George faced is moving from ranch to ranch because of what Lennie had done. When George lectures Lennie, he snaps, you cant keep a job and you lose me ever job I get. Jus keep me shovin all over the country all the time (Steinbeck 11). Moving affects Georges life because he could never settle down on a job because he had to keep running away with Lennie. In conclusion, hope and tragedy affects Georges life immensely.

Lennies encounter with hope and tragedy changes his entire life. First, Lennie experiences hope when he talks about the land and rabbits that him and George are going to own. When Curleys wife is sick of him talking about rabbits, she asks him, Dont you think of nothing but rabbits? (Steinbeck 89). The house and rabbits are something he looks forward to and gets through work for. Next, Lennie experiences tragedy by getting shot by his best friend. As Lennie is looking away, George pulls the trigger and [t]he crash of the shot rolled up the hills and rolled down again. Lennie jarred, and then settled slowly forward to the sand, and he lay without quivering (Steinbeck 106). It was more of a tragedy that affected Lennie because he was blunt about Georges decision to shoot him. Lastly, Lennie has a hope of getting Curleys wife as a friend and talks to her about the rabbits. Lennie tells Curleys wife about the dead puppy by saying, maybe if I took this pup out and throwed him away George wouldnt never know. An then I could tend the rabbits without no trouble (Steinbeck 89). Since Lennie is excluded with the boys, he feels less lonely when he interacted with Curleys wife. In conclusion, Lennie experiences hope and tragedy that has a big impact on his life.

Curleys wife encountered a hope and many tragedys that impacted her life extremely. First of all, she experiences hope when she finally finds a friend, Lennie, to who she can open up to. Curleys wife tells Lennie that she does not like Curley and that he is not a nice person, Well, I aint told nobody this before. Maybe I oughtnt to. I don like Curley. He aint a nice fella (Steinbeck 89). This conversation she had with Lennie affected her life because she did not feel so alone anymore since she told Lennie her secrets. Secondly, a tragedy that Curleys wife faced is that she gets suffocated by Lennie and dies. As Lennie held his big paws to her face, her body flopped like a fish. And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck (Steinbeck 91). This impacted her because she gets killed by the only person that she has ever opened up to. Lastly, another tragedy that she experienced is that she married Curley and gave up her dream to be an actress. The man that Curleys wife met had said, he was gonna put [her] in movies. Says [she] was a natural (Steinbeck 88). Marrying Curley affected her life immensely because it ruined her life and chances of becoming an actress. Therefore, the character of Curleys wife was greatly affected by hope tragedy.

Hope and tragedy can have big impacts on anyones lives. The characters in the novels encounter with hope and tragedy has huge affect on their lives. The characters of George, Lennie and Curleys wife all have their lives impacted due to a lot of tragedy but also some hope. In conclusion hope and tragedy had great affects on the characters lives that left two of them dead.
