1984, by George Orwell. During a cold day in April, Winston walked up the staircase to his apartment building seeing posters of Big Brothers face with the quote BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU. The people fear to express their feelings as they were always being watched by the party who controls everything. The party formed a language to remove any possibility of political rebellion. They even limit the people way of thought as free thinking was considered the worst possible crime to commit. In 1984, George Orwell proves that extreme government control suppresses individuality.

For instance, the party formed a language to remove any possibility of political rebellion which sets an overall tone that limits their emotions

For example, The ultimate goal of Newspeak is to make every single desire and thought conveyed in a single word.

Another instance is the character Syme. There is no need for the word bad it can just be called ungood.

Winston writes in a diary which is considered illegal as it allows free thought and in his diary he shows his hatred for the party risking his life to the thought police.

In addition to the tone, the setting used by the party shows the emotionless and empty city in which they live in.

There are telescreens everywhere across the city that watches your every movement and the only way to escape is to go to the poor neighborhood of the proles

Likewise, there are posters of Big Brother who symbolizes fear into the people as they cannot express themselves because they believe that he is always watching over them

The Ministry of Peace and Love have opposite meanings as they are building use by the party to govern war and torture.

Similarly, the suppression is seen through the irony that the party uses to keep people under their control

The memory hole, Winston thought he could use to store his memories was actually an incinerator.

Big brothers are supposed to help younger siblings and take care of them which are the opposite of what Big Brother does.

The situation where Winston believe that his friends Mr. Charrington and OBrien were part of the brotherhood when they were actually working for the thought police the whole time.

In brief, the suppression of individuality by extreme government control, in 1984 is that there is no way for the people of the outer party to ever gain freedom or form a rebellion. The author has used many different ways to show the power of the party throughout the book. From the ways the party used a new language that shortens their vocabulary every year. The party always finds a way to stop people who want freedom and liberty to the point of vaporization. Suppression created by the government has always existed and they will never give the public complete freedom.
