Lord of the Flies by William Golding details a savage and cruel world. Jack, a gluttonous kid controls society and severely wounds those who stand in his way. The novel starts off with a group of kids who become stranded on an island. Ralph calls an assembly and they grant him as chief. They learn to light fires using Piggys specs. Jack declares himself as a chief, replacing Ralph, and he and the hunters run off. Some more of the boys join Jack because he has control of the food, he tells his group to attack Ralphs tribe and take Piggys specs. After seeing this Ralph and piggy confront Jack; Jack ignores them and throws a rock that unfortunately lands on top of Piggy. Ralph becomes the only one left in his tribe. He sneaks to Jacks tribe and the twins tell him that Jack is going to hunt him. The next day Jack tries to hunt Ralph. Jack lights fire to the island and people in ships come. When he sees them he stops. Ralph discovers that to control society, he must use punishment. Lord of the Flies by William Golding shows that a society must rely on a system of laws with punishment otherwise chaos will exist.

Jack doesnt become chief, like he wants to. He likes being the stronger power, although, he backs off. Ralph blows a conch shell that he finds on the beach. As a result the rest of the boys walk over to Ralph. They call an assembly to set down rules; their first action is to pick a chief. The boys pick Ralph. Jack tells Ralph that he feels bad, but still helps Ralph out. After Jack helps look around the island, Jack volunteers to be a hunter, and helps light a fire. Even the choir applauded; and the freckles on Jacks face disappeared under a blush of mortification. He started up, then changed his mind and sat down again while the air rang.(Golding # ) Jack was obviously annoyed and upset. Jack took what he learned in our society, and transferred it. He knows that in life people arent always able to get what they want. Ralph feels sorry and guilty for being chosen, he lets Jack become the hunter. He behaved himself until he got settled. Ralph soon realizes that when certain people find out that some one is weak, they attack to gain more power. Then try to take advantage.

Jack declares himself as chief to gain the power that he wanted. However, he ends up breaking the rules that Ralph set down ahead of time. As a result, Ralph calls an assembly to talk about the beasty, as the assembly goes on Jack changes the topic. He claims that Ralph doesnt help, that all he does is talk. Hunting? He said. He sized them up. Each of them wore the remains of a black cap and ages ago they stood in two demure rows and their voice had been the song of Angels. Well hunt. Im going to be chief. (Golding # ). Ralph becomes puzzled that Jack took a huge of a step. At this point Ralph realizes the civilization that he created couldnt stand because when someone takes advantage of another person, no one can stop them. Ralph realizes that you must be structured to keep a grip on a society, he realizes that their will always be people who will try to take advantage. He understands that he has to punish to keep order.

Jack is now the stronger power, he wants nothing to stand in his way and he needs fire. He orders his hunters to take Piggys specs. That morning they appear in Ralphs tent, they take the specs and leave. Ralph and Piggy confront Jack; he ignores them and throws a rock on top of Piggy. Ralph watches, shocked to see the remains of Piggy all over the floor. This time the silence was complete. Ralphs lips formed a word but no sound came. (Golding # ). This moment hit Ralph as a surprise; he never thought that Jack was capable of deliberately hurting anything or anyone. This moment got Ralph to realize that you cant always talk things out; People can go a long way without structure. Some people will turn into vicious animals without structure. Some people will do anything to gain more power.

Jack is upset that he isnt chosen chief but he puts it behind him so they could start their civilization, however, Jack starts to get annoyed of being bossed around, he sees what his freedoms are and takes advantage of it and Ralph. He declares himself as chief. He becomes strong and tries to eliminate who stands in his way. He throws a rock on top of Piggy and tries to hunt Ralph. Lord of the Flies by William Golding explains that to keep control of a civilization you need punishment. This inflicts the idea of law and punishment as a legal system; it says that one person shouldnt have more power than another. It explains that people will become greedy for power. Lord of the Flies by William Golding supports the Marxism idea for a government. This book shows that certain people will take advantage of others in order to gain more power; it shows how people will go as far as they can to gain power unless they are stopped. In contrast to life, we must have structure and enforce structure to keep people in line.
