Commentary on Romeo and Juliet Essay

Romeo and Juliet is a love story about two young people from families who have been having a long-term feud. It is set in Verona where the young couple falls in love at first sight, but everything goes against them. Romeo and Juliet is one of the greatest love story ever told because the context of their relationship makes the play exciting and dramatic. Although fate goes against them the reader wants their love to succeed; we are drawn into their love because theyre young and innocent, regardless of all the events that unfold we always hope it will end happily. Shakespeare uses language to express their love and builds up a sense of irony effectively. Although they fall in love at first sight we believe its true love because they share a sonnet that creates an intense feeling, which makes us believe their love. At the beginning there is a prologue which tells us that at the end of the play the two young lovers will die a pair of star-crossed lovers take their lives due to the civil war between their families where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. The prologue reveals that it takes their death marked love to end the feud between their two households, this is effective because it sets the context of the play before it starts. The context of their love is very difficult because they are faced with many obstacles and by the end of the play all thats keeping them going is their love for each other.

The play starts by instantly showing the feud between the Capulets and Montagues, its a really dramatic start that clearly shows the feud between the two families. As Benvolio tries to stop the conflict, Tybalt a Capulet is determined to start the fight I hate the word, as I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee. The character of Tybalt is presented to us as someone who is violent and as the play goes on the audience see that he is the reason of some of the things going wrong. After the fight, the Prince enters announcing that if both families disturb the streets of Verona again then they will have to pay with their lives your lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace. The audience can already see that death is hanging over both families if another fight breaks out.

After the fight Shakespeare introduces Romeo and he begins a long elaborate speech of poem about his unrequited love for Rosaline she hath forsworn to love. Romeo is showing al the signs of a traditional melancholy courtly lover and self-pitying himself do I live dead that live to tell it now. He is in his own world and has lost touch with reality tut I have lost myself; I am not here this is not Romeo, hes some other where. Shakespeare uses language to portray the character of Romeo. He uses oxymoron to express how Romeo feels o brawling love, o loving hate. Romeo is clearly represented as a young man in love in a traditional manner confessing his love for Rosaline. As the play goes on Romeo changes from being this melancholy lover when he meets Juliet. He actually acts on His love for her and tries to make it work regardless of the obstacles they go through.
