The Great Gatsby

Picture this: Gatsby is pacing the floor of Nicks house waiting nervously for the arrival of Daisy. The weather outside has just stopped raining with damp mist rolling through the cold air. The wait is too intense for Mr. Gatsby; he checks the windows multiple times till he sees the car roll up to the driveway sending chills through his spine. Once inside Daisy and Gatsbys convocation takes an uncomfortable turn, silence strikes the living room till Nick leaves. When Nick returns its sunny outside, rays glowing through the glass windows of the house, Daisy and Gatsbys face have changed surprisingly to joy. Throughout the novel, The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgeralds describes the varying weather to show Daisy and Gatsbys rekindling relationship. In doing so, Fitzgeralds portrays that weather can effect ones emotions.

Fitzgerald uses the weather to match the emotional tone of the characters in the book. Daisy and Gatsbys relationship starts out in the damp cold mist of the afternoon, parallel to this, there emotional connection is very awkward and bitter. At many times he writes that there were pauses in convocations which lead them into uncomfortable states, outside the weather is turning from beautiful sunshine to cloudy and grey. Fitzgeralds describes Gatsbys emotional state throughout his encounter with Daisy as gloomy and bright, each time Mr. Gatsby starts to; freak out, doubt the situation, or ramble in convocations, the weather turns into the gloomy rain like fall weather. Like wise when everything is going great with Mrs. Daisy, the sun shines bright as ever through the glass window of Nicks house. Joy overcomes them both which creates a new amount of freshness in the air and visibility as far as the eye could see (Fitzgerald 101). In the background the bright lights bounce off the lake and onto Gatsby and Daisys faces which were locked together in intense life. Although life is standing still for them, there relationship as we know it is as far as its going to get. On the eve of the first autumn day, Gatsbys life comes to a tragic end with this a chill of the autumn air sweeps across West Egg. The day they met cool air swept across the face and now that Gatsby is dead the chill air comes across the house he once lived in (Fitzgerald 81).
