In Hemingways novel, The Old Man and the Sea, he expresses the abilities of being A man who can be destroyed but not defeated.. He has a lot of pride in who he is and what he stands for. Santiago uses all of his courage and endurance to catch the fish and he had gone too far out. As his courage stays strong, he spends time with what he calls the la mar and views it as beautiful as ever.

Santiago, an old fisherman and the main character of Ernest Hemingways The Old Man and the Sea, has a large amount of pride in who he is, what he does, and what he stands for. In the story, he shows his love for fishing, and although he isnt the luckiest man in catching fish, he keeps trying and never gives up. Living alone in a small shack, he stays proud of who he is and continues doing what he lives for, fishing.

The old man in the story is a very courageous man who never gives up. With all his courage he faced the difficulty of catching the largest fish hes ever seen within days. As the Marlin takes him farther and farther out to sea, he has high hopes that hell be able to go home with this fish and be proud of what he has caught. When the old man cut his palm and was in a numerous amount of pain, he still never gave up and persevered the whole rest of the way. Santiago is a man whos courage stays strong.

Being able to have endurance is an important part to staying strong. After the first shark attack towards the old man and saying, A man can be destroyed but not defeated, proves to the readers that he has the ability of strength to last him his whole journey. Although the old mans body hadnt been as strong as it was before, his heart was as great in strength and he was able to eventually defeat the Marlin. As the days started to pass without food and water, the old man had been growing weak and tired. Finding his way back to the village wasnt easy, but once he had arrived and carried the skiff up to the shack, the people of the village heard of his journey and the old man finally gained respect, Manolin saw that all of his endurance truly paid off.

In concluding, Santiago had a lot of pride in who he is, what he does and what he stands for. Although he had gone too far out, his courage and endurance had stayed strong. At the end of the day he returned, he could truly say that A man can be destroyed but not defeated.
