In the novel A Tale of Two Cities Miss Pross is a foil of Madame Defarge. They contribute to the theme of good versus evil because Miss Pross loves Lucie and would do anything for Lucie but Madame Defarge is amused of hatred and vengeance. Madame Defarge is Dickens prime example of selfish hatred. She will do anything to avenge her sisters death, including killing Lucie Manette. Miss Pross, on the other hand, is the prime example of selfless love. She is willing to give her life to protect Lucie, whom she raised while Lucies father, Dr. Manette, Was held prisoner for eighteen years. Miss Pross's loyalty and respectability highlight and emphasize the evil and unforgiving nature of Madame Defarge.
Miss Pross foils Madame Defarge and highlights the theme good versus evil because Miss Prossloves Lucie and would do anything for Lucie. Miss Pross symbolizes order, respectability and loyalty. If Miss Pross has a dream, it consists of her best wishes for Lucie, her hope that Lucie will have happiness and a good life. When Lucie flees with her family at the end of the novel, Miss Pross becomes the woman who meets up with Madame Defarge in her stead. Dickens emphasizes time and again the ways that Miss Pross has devoted her entire life to Lucie. Miss Pross serves as Lucies proxy in a battle to the death. Miss Pross, strong and determined to protect Lucie, confronts Madame Defarge, who is a danger to Lucie. Miss Pross acts heroically, killing Defarge in preventing her from discovering information about Lucies family. Miss Prosss devotion is not because she cares for Lucie but because shes helping to ensure the future of the traditional family. So their foil highlights the theme good versus evil because Miss Pross loves Lucie and would do anything for her.
Miss Pross foils Madame Defarge and highlights the theme good versus evil by Madame Defarge is amused of hatred and vengeance from Miss Pross. Madame Defarge spends her days knitting a 'register' of names of people she has marked for death. Her desire for vengeance comes from the murders of her brother and brother-in-law and the torture of her family at the hands of the Marquis St. Evremonde and his brother, Charles Darnay's uncle and father. She is so filled with hatred toward them that she wants to wipe out Darnay's entire family, including the Manettes. She will do anything to avenge her sisters death, including killing Lucie Manette, and Miss Pross would not let her. So their foil highlights the theme good versus evil because Madame Defarge is amused of hatred and vengeance from Miss Pross.
