Emily Dickinson Poetry
I heard a Fly buzz When I died and I died for Beauty but was Scarce are two very great poems that Emily Dickinson wrote. We will talk about the theme, imagery, and tone of each poem. The poems both talk about death, and about how it is unexpected, and how there can be some kind of hesitation.
There is hesitation even in death is the theme for I heard a Fly buzz When I died. The theme is very unusual, really. It means that people can still be hesitant about death. They can get distracted by something as small as a Fly.
The Fly is one of the main images we see when we read the poem I heard a Fly buzz When I died. The death in the poem seems to be painless, but the vision of death is gross, like a Fly. The Fly is the pain image we see, because it is mentioned in three of the four stanzas, but the Fly is not all we imagine. We have an image of a dying man, light, people, and the color blue. The dying man is the person that is dying, the speaker, and the light is the light from heaven, but this blue color, which is from the Fly, is getting in the way of the light, which is the light to heaven.
Uncertain, untimely death, is the tone that we get from the poem. We do not know when we will die, and when we do there can be a hesitation, from something as small as a Fly.
It does not matter what you died for, you are dead is the theme for I died for Beauty but was Scarce. In the poem, the speaker is talking about dying for beauty, or dying for truth. The speaker is saying that they have a goal to die for beauty or for truth.
In the poem we get the image of death, along with a tomb, bodies, and moss. The main image is the moss, because moss starts growing on things that are dead, or dying. It says in the poem until the moss had reached our lips, and covered up our names which means that it has started to grow and covered the dead body.
We sense a dark tone in the poem, because it is talking about death, and how we all seem to strive to die for something. We seem to want to die and be known for beauty, or truth, but in reality when you, your dead and at that point it does not really matter why you died, because you are now dead.
In both poems you are dealing with death, and how it can be so easy to be hesitant and get distracted by little things. In both poems you see that there is a distraction in the death, whether its, beauty, truth, or even a fly, but in the end it does not matter why you died, because now you are dead.
