The film Blade Runner and novel Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep share for the most part the same story line and purpose which is capturing the androids. The movie and book balance each other out well because of having separate purposes. The movie is there to give you a visual and intends to have a more realistic experience where as the book gives a thought out detailed description as often as needed. Both genres have related topics that differ in some shape or form that separate from one another. Themes that can be both followed in the novel and film include atmosphere, technology and characterization.
A majorly different aspect that separates Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? And the film Blade Runner from being different was the atmosphere. In the novel it was portrayed as being a run down city due to the lack of humans incapable of bringing back what the earth had. The after effects of War Terminus left the city destroyed being covered in radioactivity. The readers got the impression that earth seemed to have depopulated due to only a portion of humans being forced to stay while the rest departed to other planets. The film however is shown the complete opposite. The opening image is shown as Harrison Ford in the midst of Japan surrounded by a lively, crowded amount of people. The constant sounds of a busy city were well exposed through out the film giving the viewers a sense of reality. The area around him consisted of large buildings looking futuristic like with billboards mounted on the sides constantly showing advertisements. The intense amount of bright lights created the feeling of business and livelihood within the city.
The use of technology was described greatly in the book however was close to unrealistic in the movie. The form of transportation presented in both the novel and movie compare and differ at the same time. Blade Runner does an amazing job of describing technological advancements the way a film should. Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep has a more difficult task that is to create the image being described and have it come to life. Philip K. Dick presents humans as machines. Advanced technology helps further develop these androids into looking human like. They are programmed and controlled by technologic forces including the mood organ and the empathy box. The devices were the main objects that separated the androids from humans. Neither of these were presented in the movie which further more lessened the viewers imagination to expand. Because of Blade Runner being produced in the 80s, it has noticeably been a disadvantage for todays time due to how far technology has improved since then. Philip K. Dick did a far better job using futuristic and intelligent advancements described in the story since he was looking far more into the future.
The main character differs in the film and novel in many ways. It seems to the reader that he is this lonely man wondering throughout a city having one destiny and that is to separate the androids from humans. Through his journey he unexpectedly finds love, which coincidentally turns out to be an android. The idea of Rick becoming sexually involved with an android is unheard of. This goes to show how androids were never given a chance at being human and that androids and humans are more alike than anything. The book is completely opposite when it comes to describe how he has already found love and is a married man but very unhappy with his career. In both the film and novel, Rick Deckard is set out to be a bounty hunter and capture the escaped Nexus-6 androids. This is one of the few similarities that both Blade Runner and Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep have in common.
Religion is the biggest difference between the film and novel. Mercerism was the defining religious cult in the book where as Blade Runner did not have a cult or religion to take part in. Only humans can partake in this act by practicing it through an electronic device known as an Empathy Box. It allows all users to share their mood therefore creating an almost average mood. You do so by gripping the handles looking clear into the monitor and then instantly being directed to the mind of Wilbur Mercer. No android can take part in this not even the most advanced and technological ones.
To conclude, Blade Runner and Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep are purposely created differently for many reasons. Its up to the reader to visualize the story and for the viewer to watch it come to life.
Reflection: All in all I dont feel to confident in my writing ability and I never have. I am glad this opportunity for you to look them over and help us become much better writers is going to happen. For me I always personally like movies better because I have a hard time reading and visualizing stuff. I also have a hard time remembering what I have read after I have read it.
