In Araby by James Joyce the boys relationship with Mangans sister is very limited and also is a type of friendship where they just know who they are. The boy is in love with Mangans sister.
The boy hardly knows Mangans sister and she hardly knows who he is but yet he thinks he has a relationship with her. He would watch her through his window every time she walked outside the house. He would watch her do different things when she was near or around him. He had spoken with her only a few times but nothing important. He has fallen in love with her. One time she asked him about Araby. This was one of the few but not important conversations he had with her. The boy promised that he made to Mangans sister is that if he goes he will bring her something back.
Mangans sister has no idea that he has been watching her and that he has fallen in love with her. When the boy talks about Mangans sister he is describing her with almost romantic and lyrical words. He is describing her when he doesnt even know her. He is in love with the idea that he is in love with her and the boys relationship with her is futile. He has no experience and good ideas with love and relationships. Hes never experienced it and was making a fool of himself. Also the boy was turning all of his focus to loving and thinking about her. He was not focused on his school work, friends, or at home with his family.
In the short story the boys relationship with Mangans sister is futile. The just knew each other and she didnt even know he loved her. His relationship was based on the idea that he loved being in love with her.
