William Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet is set in the 16th Century in Verona, Italy. The play opens with two families who are each others despicable enemies having an argument in public: the Montagues and Capulets. Act 1 Scene 5 is momentous because the argument exaggerates and involves the Duke, the Duke warns them about future arguments, fights and brawls. If anything or anyone provoked either side, they would be banished or put to death. The Capulet family plan a great ball in which they invite all respected upper class residents. Here the audience see Romeo Montague meet Juliet Capulet for the first time. Romeo and his friends decide to gatecrash the Capulets ball because they consider that the restrictions placed on them by the Duke were merely the Capulets fault. Act 1 Scene 5 is significant because Romeo and Juliet meet for the first time and they fall in love, this is obviously causing a big problem between the Montagues and Capulets as they are loathed enemies and are involved in a century old feud.

Act 1 scene 5 takes place in the Capulet household. The addressees will encounter new characters such as the nurse; the audience acknowledge the fact that she is against the feud and the Capulet ideas, due to the fact that they treat Juliet as their property and not their daughter. Lord Capulet is introduced; the audience recognize that he is a really pleasant man because he makes fun of his own age, although he thinks womens role is just to please the guests Ladies that have their toes unplagued with corns will have a bout with you. He stops Tybalt from provoking Romeo into a brawl at the party and does not make a scene. Even though the man to the house Lord Capulet seems a pleasant man, he seems to be performing an act in front of the guests just to protect his manifestation and reputation.

In this scene you can tell that Tybalt hates Romeo so much that he is prepared to kill him, It fits, when such a villain is a guest; I'll not endure him. By coming to the party, Tybalt thinks that Romeo has come to laugh at their party and that he is come to cause trouble. He wants to kill Romeo so that he can protect his familys honour, Now, by the stock and honour of my kin, to strike him dead, I hold it not a sin meaning that it will not be a sin if Tybalt kills Romeo because he is doing it in the honour of his family. Tybalt is trying hard to kill Romeo that he has not recognised that Romeo and Juliet have fallen in love. During the party the audience find out that Tybalt is plotting to kill Romeo for the embarrassment that he has caused him.

The themes that are introduced are Love and Hate. In one part of the scene you can see the hatred between Romeo and Tybalt because they are both sworn enemies. The Capulets and the Montagues have been at each others throats for centauries. You can sense the tension in the air when Tybalt sees Romeo; he gets angry straight away because a Montague is in the Capulet household and he does not want them there, This, by his voice, should be a Montague. Fetch me my rapier, boy, this makes it clear that Tybalt does not want a Montague any where near him. This affects the audience as they know that Tybalt is planning revenge on Romeo and Romeo doesnt have a clue about what is going on. I think that Tybalt is to blame the downfall of Romeo and Juliet because he was very quick tempered and aggressive and more than anyone and everyone he was the one that kept the fighting going on between the two families.

The second theme that is mentioned in the play is the theme of love. Even though they both Romeo and Juliet were born into the feud they both ended up tangled in each others love. However Romeo and Juliet both have their faces hidden but still

they seemed to have found each other and recognized that they are from families who are each others reviled enemies. Romeo and Juliet secretly fall in love with each other at the Capulets party and this makes the audience see that there is the theme of love in the play.

The audience see this when Romeo falls in love with Juliet but his happiness is short-lived when Romeo finds out that Juliet is a Capulet, Is she a Capulet? O dear account! My life is my foe's debt meaning that he wont be able to live without her. As Romeo makes his point to Benvolio that he has fallen in love with his rivals daughter, Juliet also informs her Nurse that she has lost her heart to her foe. Go ask him his name: if he to be married my grave is like to be my wedding bed. Like Romeo, Juliet too thinks she will not be able to live without him.

Romeo uses metaphors to describe Juliet as a bright torch o she doth teach the torches to burn bright he saying that she is beautiful and stand out from every one else. Also he uses similes. He calls her a rich jewelIt seems she hangs upon the check of night like a rich jewel in an Ethiopes ear he compares her to a jewel. He says that a jewel is so rare, valuable and beautiful. He uses other metaphors amplifying that she is pure, and beautiful, innocent and stands out from the crowed. So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows he saying implying that the other people in the party are unpleasant and threatening like black crows and she is a white dove and full of purity. He compares Juliets beauty to exceptional things for example like a rich jewel in an Ethiopes ear meaning that she so rare, valuable and beautiful than anyone else. He compares her hand to a shrine and indicates that she needs to be worshipped, If I profane with my unworthiest hand this holy shrine.

When Romeo and Juliet are making a conversation Romeo uses a 14 line sonnet, this demonstrates the love that Romeo has for Juliet. This captures the audience interests and affects them in a harmonious way. These lines reach out to the addressees and try to portray how sweet, pleasurable and desired love is in controversy to the hatred explained in earlier acts.

If Romeo had not decided to gate crash the party then he may not have meet Juliet and may not have fallen in love with her. Everything that happened was because of fate. The young couple were doomed right from the start because of the on-going feud between the two families. I think that fate played an immense part in the play and it was always going to end in tragedy. In this scene Romeo and Juliet meet and fall in love. This is why the scene is vital to the play as the most significant occurrence happens.
