Fear in The Crucible Essay

If a person is frightened enough they allow that fear to over cloud their better judgment and commonsense. In the book The Crucible by Arthur Miller the characters allowed their fear of witches to take over their better judgment and turn on each other. In the book they allowed their fear of witches to overpower their commonsense and misused their authority. They were so frightened that they were going to be seen as witches and doing witchcraft that they sold out their neighbors in order to protect their names. In the book the town was very religious that the fear of any one being witches took over the town. Fear played a huge part in the towns decisions they made.

In the book The Crucible, the characters allowed their fear of witches and witchcraft made them become dishonest. In The Crucible Proctor committed adultery with Abigail, Abigail ended up falling in love with Proctor so much that she claimed Proctors wife of doing witchcraft in order to be with him. The town was so scared of people being witches and doing witchcraft that they didnt care if Abigail was lying or not. Proctor also lied in order to prove his wifes innocence. In the book the characters were dishonest not only to protect their loved ones lives but as well as theirs. Fear played a big part in making these characters dishonest because, it was them being scared of witches and witchcraft that they ended up lying.

In the book The Crucible, the town was very religious and they allowed religion to be a huge part in the decisions they made. If you were a witch or involved in witch craft during that time you were seen as being involved with the devil or very much associating with him and that was against their religion. There was so much fear of being accused of being witches that they told on each other because they didnt want to be accused of being a witch being it was religiously wrong. In the story they were often say that if you were involved with doing witchcraft then you were being involved with the devil and that you were going against god. People were so religious that the fear of rebelling against god made them say things and do things in order to not be accused of doing that stuff. Thats how religion played a big part during that time because, people were too afraid to go against their religion.

In the book The Crucible, some of the characters allowed fear to overpower their better judgment. They would misuse their authority because, they were too afraid of living among witches and being targeted in witchcraft. They thought that the so called witches used witchcraft to make the kids sick and cause chaos against the town. The people that had upper authority misused their power and prosecuted any one that they felt was witches and didnt care if they was or wasnt. They allowed their fear of witches control how they used their authority.
