Commentary on The Great Gatsby Essay

Complicated 1920s society is determined as historical background of this critic story, The Great Gatsby. Published on the April, 10, 1925, Francis Scott Fitzgerald had expressed the phase of those times, which was around 1920s. In the U.S.A, the society had become more complicated after the Great War just ended. The writer primarily exerted his ideals through society of 1920s by comprising symbolisms. Throughout the story, the reality of American Dream had been dissolved. Then, the story wrapped up with the ultimate question of its purpose.

Few symbolisms are contained with criticism toward 1920s periodical status. A main character, Jay Gatsby, is an emblem that represented the American dream. He was one of the generations that group faced newly disordered society. To achieve love with Daisy who fell in love with him, the great tried to build the wealth himself. He even changed his given name to complete his wealth.

Known as Jazz Ages, 1920s society of U.S has faced new aspects of it. After war with Europe, few controversies such as racism rose among the people. A truth under hidden hope is the main theme of this story about Gatsby. The writer became sarcastic to express a reality of American society that usually had been known for hope to all immigrants or even Americans themselves. It is because for prosperous economy of U.S after involving the War on Europe. It is clear fact that many Europeans migrated to U.S when they had realized that there were only the ruins and no hope on the land of Europe. Many immigrants arrived with great hope to be better circumstances than in the Europe. They would name this hope of America, the American dream.

An artist of literary expressed that there might be hope although the reality of society had been packed for hope as if it is packaged object. The idea of hope which make the readers to think whether it would be possibility or breaking down of society reminds the readers by showing Gatsbys romance with his situations as if is webbed by the spider. In fact, as the story unfolded, Fitzgerald did not suggest, or even conclude if the hope of American Dream packed by the group of people fell in great ambition of overstate.

One of the members which belonged to a group known as, the Lost Generation, F. Scott Fitzgerald was greatly inspired by the aftermath of the Great War. The novelist would be surprised since he realized new aspects of society. The story wrapped with almost every single aspect of society does not suggest that if the America of 1920s was hopeful or hopeless. As member of the Lost Generation, defined by the modern expert of literary, however, have provided the facts and threw this evasive question to the readers.
