Through the Tunnel

Through the Tunnel it has written by Donis Lessing. She was born on October 22, 1919. This story is about a boy called Jerry whose father has died. While his mother and he are on vacations at the seashore. Jerry is An English boy that is eleven-years-old. As we can see the human experience consists of many facets and aspects. It can be classify as life itself. In the short story Through the Tunnel we examined these aspects. They are psychological, physiological, mental/emotional, and spiritual. As Ive been exploring the relationship between these aspects with the theme of the short story of internal and external conflict. And according to its definition, we find that conflict is the struggle between two opposing forces or two elements or ideas struggling for mastery within a person.

Jerry and his mother have left England to visit a seaside route they have visited in the past. As they walked to the crowded beach on the first morning of their vacation, Jerry paused at the path to a wild, rocky bay area nearby. His mother stopped him to wait for her, while the young boy kept extending among the bay area. Despite the fact his mother was no longer with him. He suddenly looked some boys arriving toward him in the rocky bay. Then, as he looked them they were swimming he enjoyed to them. While the biggest boy dived into the water and stays under for a long time, but psychological Jerry torn seemed worry about him and he gave a yell of it. None of the other boys seemed concern about it. The boy finally came up on the other side of a large rock. Then all of the boys dived in.

As Jerry continued diving with the boys, he tried to cross underwater like the swimmers did; as he was diving with them underwater, suddenly he saw a black wall of rock looming at him. He touched it and bounced it at once to the surface. After that, he understood that he couldnt go beyond that, because there was some hole in it. Physiological Jerry kept extending among of time he can hold his breath underwater with goggles. He deprived himself of oxygen, which is an important part of the air you breathe. Depriving the brain of oxygen can quickly cause dizziness and loss of consciousness, upon losing consciousness the body would automatically begin breathing then Jerry would drown, because people cannot obtain oxygen underwater. But over some days he practiced holding his breathe longer and longer with fear and persistence to dive the tunnel.

Finally, after a while practicing holding his breathes he would do it. Two days before leave. Finally he went to the bay where the rocky bay was. Jerry was capable now to get through the tunnel; yet was some fear in side of him, but even though it was. He put on his goggles and picked up a heavy stone. He filled his lungs with air and dived into the water. The stone took him down to the bottom. He let went of it and began to count through one hundred and fifteen. Soon he found and entered the hole in the rock. His lungs were no longer right. He began to hurt his lungs while he was getting into the tunnel. A few more strokes and he would be out. But he was conscientiously he would get through it. Because even though he had no air in his lungs his courage made him to get through it. He was counting a hundred and fifteen and pounded through his head, and he feebly clutched at rocks. His was groping forward through the dim water. Finally he came up to the surface. Jerry mental/emotional, and spiritual was worried. He probably said into his mind. Im worry about my mom, because he loved his mother. Even though he was a rebel boy, for no being with her. He still loved her. As you can see his aspects were spiritually and some sort of mental as emotional conflicts. He also was trying to get attention of the boys, also with his mother, because he wanted to show her that he could stay longer under the water and enter through the tunnel. Jerrys internal conflict is that he doesnt want to tell her mother. Because probably he could get punish because of it. Jerrys mom thought that even she was going to stop him from no going to the bay anymore, she would thought that nothing would happen to him.

Jerrys interior conflict is that he would no longer have a chance to go to the bay and swim into the tunnel with the guys. Another is that he would never cause other conflict to his mother. Jerry is attempting to swim again with his friends but he doesnt want to cause any problem again. These conflicts are really often in our daily life. As you can see its a human experience into two elements or ideas struggling for mastery within a person. These conflicts happened to me when I was barely a child.

When I was a child, I used to travel really often town to town with my friends in El Salvador. I had an experience with them. We went to the beach as soon we got there I went to swim with them in a bay nearby. My friends and I were swimming and diving but the water was no deep yet. Until we felt that the bay was getting deeper and we stayed in the middle of the bay in some rocks trying to get through the other side because there was more safety for us. I remember that we wait one hour and other friends telling us to get out from there because it was getting deeper as we couldnt imagine. My friends and I were trying to cross it. But finally all my friends and I, we did a chain to cross the waters but we were in some point to get drown because the water was super deep for us that we couldnt breath in some parts of the little bay. In this experience I had spiritual, emotional/mental, physiological, and psychological. Because I was thinking in everyone, I hurt my feet because of the rocky bay. Also my friends were worry about each other. And after we got out from there we were laughing each other.

As a result of this story Through the Tunnel we found out that there are many factors that the human experience consists in many facets and aspects. It can be also define as life itself. We examined physiological, psychological, spiritual, mental and emotional factors. Even though Jerry achieved his goals. He had those problems internal and as we can see physiological problems. Through the Tunnel is another human experience that we found in it. In this facets and aspects are solutions that we could it saw, as spiritual, emotional, physiological, mental, and psychological. Jerry the young boy was attempt to everything but we can find that he didnt give up. In our life we all have battles, we know those are hard for someone but nothing is impossible if you believe that you can accomplish it.
